EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES/ANTI-DISCRIMINATION POLICY

As a Registered Childminder and a member of the NCMA I will not discriminate against any child, family of group in society on the grounds of gender, racial origin, disability, cultural or social background (including religion, language or class).

"Since the Children Act 1989, anti-discriminatory practice is required by law in all places where children are cared for. The child's religious, racial, cultural and linguistic background must be taken into account. This practice should be active in promoting positive images and reinforcing the self-esteem of all the children. Challenging bias and prejudice where it is encountered is a major responsibility for all Childminders".

(Taken from "Childminding - A Guide To Good Practice" by Hobart & Frankel)

Each child should respect everyone as an individual and an equal.  Each child is encouraged to positively challenge and reject prejudice and stereotyping. As a Childminder, I will endeavour to be a positive role model to the children in my care. I will provide positive images and accurate information about gender, race, cultural and religious differences and about various disabilities. We would use play to learn about traditions, customs, languages, festivals or disability etc.

I would not deny a place to a child with "special needs" but I must be confident that I could offer the child the best possible care. At present I do not have any specific training in this area. Of course, I would be willing to try and the parents and myself would work together to evaluate whether the arrangement was working and whether the child’s needs were being met.

BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT POLICY

I
operate a non-smacking or physical punishment policy in line with the NCMA.  No child in my care will suffer any pain or humiliation, as I believe in positive discipline as a more effective way of managing behaviour.

*  Reward good behaviour to encourage repetition

*  Praise and give attention to avoid it being sought

*  Make children feel valued by building their self-esteem

*  Set realistic limits according to age and stage of development

*  Set a good example myself!

*  Time out when required (sitting in hallway)

*  Being consistent when saying "no" and explaining reasons for it

*  Apologies and hugs will be given to others when required

*  Communicate with parents if a discipline problem arises to find a solution together

*  Reminded of the house rules
